The New York Yankees were one of many teams negatively impacted by the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal from 2017.

They reached the ALCS that year and matched up with Houston.

The home team won every game of the series, with the Astros winning the first two at home, the Yankees coming home and winning all three games, and then the Astros rallying from a 3-2 series deficit to eliminate the Bronx Bombers.

Yankee’ general manager Brian Cashman still appears to be bitter about that series, saying that he takes offense to people saying the Yankees haven’t won the World Series since 2009.

Cashman believes that his team in 2017 would have won a title if not for Houston’s antics.

What Could Have Been

Cashman is understandably frustrated.

The truth is, the Yankees probably would have won the ALCS if the Astros hadn’t been up to something.

The most telling aspect of that series is the first two games of the series, both of which the Astros won by a final of 2-1 and games that the Yankees could have easily won.

If the Astros weren’t cheating, then New York likely would have swept the series.

But it is a bit bold of Cashman to say the Yankees would have won the World Series, especially when the Los Angeles Dodgers had won 104 games and were perhaps the deepest team in all of baseball that year.

Still, Cashman is understandably still bitter about the situation, as anybody would be if they found out that the team that beat theirs was cheating.

Perhaps it could have saved Joe Girardi‘s job as the Yankees’ manager had they won the series.

Unfortunately, we’ll never know.

It will always be a mystery.
