Through 1 Quarter

The Arizona State Sun Devils typically have all the answers at home, but the Oregon State Beavers are posing a tough problem. It’s anybody’s game after one quarter, but the Beavers are ahead 3 to nothing. RB B.J. Baylor has led the way so far for Oregon State, as he has picked up 37 yards on the ground on four carries.

Both Oregon State and the Sun Devils padded the win column in their previous outings. Since either team has a chance to claim another victory, we’ll find out who wants it more.

Current Records: Arizona State 7-3; Oregon State 6-4

What to Know

The Oregon State Beavers are 1-3 against the Arizona State Sun Devils since November of 2017, but they’ll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. Oregon State and ASU will face off in a Pac-12 battle at 10:30 p.m. ET at Reser Stadium. These two teams seek to continue their momentum from their previous wins.

When you finish with 231 more yards than your opponent like the Beavers did last week, a favorable outcome is almost sure to follow. They were the clear victors by a 35-14 margin over the Stanford Cardinal. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Oregon State had established a 28-7 advantage. Oregon State QB Chance Nolan was slinging it as he passed for two TDs and 257 yards on 25 attempts in addition to punching in one rushing touchdown. Nolan’s 67-yard touchdown toss to WR Trevon Bradford in the third quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

Meanwhile, the Washington Huskies were up 24-14 over ASU going into the fourth quarter last week, but ASU stole the victory right from under the Huskies’ nose in the closing minutes for a final score of 35-30. The win came about thanks to a strong surge after the first quarter to overcome a 14 to nothing deficit. It was another big night for the Sun Devils’ RB Rachaad White, who rushed for two TDs and 184 yards on 32 carries. One of those touchdowns came with 1:18 remaining to put ASU in the lead for good.

The Beavers are expected to lose this next one by 3. There could be an interesting gambling play in this one, as they have done quite well against the spread at home this season while ASU have struggled against the spread on the road.

Oregon State is now 6-4 while ASU sits at 7-3. A couple defensive stats to keep an eye on: Oregon State is 199th worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 18 on the season. The Sun Devils have experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the contest with the 184th most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 15 on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.

The Gamecocks are coming off a 56-20 win against Charlotte on Saturday, while the Bulldogs (1-2) lost 41-27 at North Carolina A&T in their last outing.

Kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC is set for 7 p.m. ET. Why South Carolina can cover

The Gamecocks have won 35 of their last 41 home games versus non-conference opponents, including triumphs over Georgia State and Charlotte this season. They are 38-12 overall in their last 50 non-conference games, with seven of the losses coming against Clemson. The team also has enjoyed tremendous success versus schools that currently do not reside in a Power Five conference, posting a 51-4 record in such contests since 2001.

South Carolina ran for six touchdowns in last week’s victory against the 49ers and already has matched its total of rushing TDs in 2021. MarShawn Lloyd registered half of the team’s ground scores on Saturday and has five on the season after notching one in 11 games last year. The sophomore, who also has a receiving touchdown this campaign, more than doubled his output of 75 rushing yards over his first three outings of 2022 by gaining 169 on 15 carries — both of which were career highs.

Why South Carolina State can cover

Quarterback Corey Fields came up with one of the best performances of his career in Saturday’s loss to the Aggies, throwing for 316 yards and four touchdowns. The senior has made four TD tosses in two of his last four outings, also accomplishing the feat in the Bulldogs’ 31-10 victory against Jackson State in last year’s Celebration Bowl. Fields’ favorite target was junior wideout Shaquan Davis, who hauled in six passes for 127 yards and extended his streak to five straight games with a TD reception dating back to last season.

South Carolina State will be hoping for a better effort on the ground as it rushed 22 times for only 12 yards versus North Carolina A&T. Coach Buddy Pough is optimistic about the availability of Kendrell Flowers, who made one catch for six yards but did not have a carry in last week’s contest due to an undisclosed injury. The sophomore running back is averaging 6.5 yards per rushing attempt this season after recording 153 and two touchdowns against Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 10.
