Through 3 Quarters

Down three at the end of last quarter, the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks have now snagged the lead. They have emerged as the frontrunner after three quarters and are ahead of the Arkansas State Red Wolves 24-17.

Louisiana-Monroe has been riding high on the performance of WR Malik Jackson, who has rushed for two TDs and 164 yards on 19 carries. Jackson has put himself on the highlight reel with a 75-yard TD scramble in the third quarter.

Arkansas State has been led by WR Corey Rucker, who so far has punched in one rushing touchdown in addition to catching four passes for 59 yards.

What to Know

This Saturday, the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks are hoping to patch up the holes in a defense that has allowed an average of 36.33 points per matchup. The Warhawks and the Arkansas State Red Wolves will face off in a Sun Belt battle at 5 p.m. ET Saturday at JPS Field at James L. Malone Stadium. Louisiana-Monroe have not won a single game against Arkansas State in their most recent matchups, going 0-6 since November of 2015.

Louisiana-Monroe came up short against the Texas State Bobcats last week, falling 27-19. Despite the defeat, Louisiana-Monroe had strong showings from QB Chandler Rogers, who accumulated 262 passing yards in addition to rushing for one TD and 52 yards, and RB Andrew Henry, who punched in one rushing touchdown. Henry had some trouble finding his footing against the Appalachian State Mountaineers two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction.

Meanwhile, Arkansas State was expected to have a tough go of it last week, and, well, they did. Their painful 48-14 loss to Appalachian State might stick with them for a while. The Red Wolves were down 38-14 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. QB Layne Hatcher had a memorable game, but not in the way you want to be remembered: despite two touchdowns, he threw three interceptions with only 137 yards passing.

This next game is expected to be close, with the Warhawks going off at just a 3-point favorite. Now might not be the best time to take Louisiana-Monroe against the spread since they’ve let down bettors for the past two consecutive games.

With the two teams each stumbling in off of a defeat, both will be hungry for the victory. Check back to see which squad is able to work their way into the win column.
