The Cleveland Cavaliers went the extra mile to try and get Donovan Mitchell.

The early returns of that move were quite impressive, and it didn’t take long before he developed strong chemistry with Darius Garland.

Unfortunately, the Cavs’ lack of depth and experience exposed them in the postseason, and what was once a promising campaign ended in heartbreak.

Ever since that day, there has been plenty of speculation regarding Mitchell’s future with the team and whether he’ll sign a contract extension.

That’s why he took some time on Media Day to make it loud and clear that if he were to sign said extension, it would be next summer, not this one (via Camryn Justice).

The former Utah Jazz star still has two more guaranteed years remaining on his contract.

He’ll make north of $32 million next season and almost $35 million the season after that.

Then, he has a player option for the 2025-26 campaign or could become an unrestricted free agent at 30 years old.

As of now, he’s eligible to sign a three-year extension worth up to around $150 million, but that doesn’t make a lot of sense, as waiting another season would grant him an additional year on his contract.

Small market teams are always at risk of losing their best players.

If that becomes an issue and it feels like Mitchell won’t look to extend his stay at The Land, then the team will have no choice but to at least gauge the trade market for his services, and there should be plenty of suitors lining up to try and get him.

Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers certainly didn’t sound like someone looking to leave his team on Monday.

Speaking to the press during the team’s Media Day, Embiid spoke about this desire to compete hard every single year in hopes of winning a championship.

According to Kyle Neubeck, Embiid said: “What am I, 29? At least for the next eight years, I think we should go out every single year to try to win the championship…there should never be any lost season.”

Those are the words of someone who believes in his team and thinks they could be long-term competitors.

This is the sort of thing that Sixers fans want to hear, especially after the summer they just went through.

Embiid recently made comments suggesting that he could leave his team in the future if they don’t start winning big in the postseason.

He has been with Philadelphia since being drafted in 2014 and is quite frankly tired of coming close but not close enough.

Last season was one of Embiid’s best yet.

He produced 33.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game and earned his first MVP trophy.

The team looked like it was in good shape to go far in the postseason but instead, they again didn’t reach their goals.

His comments about possibly departing from Philadelphia came after yet another disappointing playoff run.

The offseason has also been rough and tumble for the Sixers, with James Harden desperately wanting to leave and essentially giving up on the team.

Despite all of that, Embiid sounds like he is committed, focused, and intent on playing and winning for a long time.
