Mets Remain Linked To 2 Intriguing Players

Ever since hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen took over the New York Mets a couple of years ago, they showed they won’t hesitate to invest heavily on a player they like.

Before last season, they traded for shortstop Francisco Lindor and gave him a $341 million contract, and during the 2021-22 offseason they signed Max Scherzer to a three-year, $130 million deal just a few months ago, and they also added Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar recently.

The Mets, however, may not be done spending.

Their pitching rotation could use some more help, since they lost Noah Syndergaard and Marcus Stroman to free agency, and Joey Lucchesi had to go under the knife last season and will likely miss the whole 2022 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

But even though their offense is currently loaded with talent, they may make a couple of extra additions.

They certainly have the financial power to bring in more stars if they want to.

They May Pursue Two Power Bats

According to SI.com’s Pat Ragazzo, the Mets may go after old friend Michael Conforto and Kris Bryant after the lockout is lifted.

Conforto will likely depend on the price tag: he didn’t have a good 2021: he had a .729 OPS, but has a .824 career mark and has surpassed .900 two times, in 2017 and 2020.

Bryant, however, has long been a Mets’ favorite, as they pursued him in last season’s trade deadline.

He hit .265/.353/.481 with 25 home runs between the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants and can play both infield and outfield corners.

Only time will tell if the Mets will land one of them or both, but their lineup could go from very good to top of the league in a hurry with either one of them.

Blue Jays Make A Shocking Decision On Alek Manoah

In 2021, when he made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays, Alek Manoah looked like a star with a 3.22 ERA in 111.2 innings.

He fulfilled that promise last year, when his spectacular 2.24 ERA in 196.2 frames gave him a place among the three AL Cy Young finalists.

Things went south in 2023, though.

South, as in really south.

After conceding a whopping six earned runs and seven hits while getting just one out in his most recent outing against the Houston Astros, the team decided to send him down.

It wasn’t to Triple-A or Double-A, though: the Jays are sending him to the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Evidently, Toronto wants Manoah away from the spotlight at the moment as he works through some issues.

Mainly, he has had severe control issues (he has handed out 6.52 walks per nine innings this year, up from just 2.33 last season) and allowed too much hard contact.

It has all resulted in an ugly 6.36 ERA in 58 frames in the current campaign.

Manoah is much, much better than that, and if there is no injury, he should be able to bounce back eventually as the team and the pitcher spot what’s wrong.

The Blue Jays need the best version of Manoah if they are going to make a deep playoff push this year.

There are other really talented pitchers on the staff but Manoah, when he is on, is probably the best of the bunch.

There is no word on how long he will stay in the Complex League, but no matter where he is, his priority should be getting himself right.
