Through 1 Quarter

The Kentucky Wildcats were expected to take an ‘L’ in this one, but so far it isn’t playing out to script. They have emerged as the frontrunner after one quarter and are ahead of the Louisville Cardinals 14-7. The Wildcats have been riding high on the performance of QB Will Levis, who has accumulated 69 passing yards in addition to rushing for two TDs and 50 yards.

UK and U of L came into this game with previous-game wins. It’s looking like UK will be able to keep the momentum, but U of L still has three quarters to right the ship.

What to Know

The Louisville Cardinals will take on the Kentucky Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday at home. These two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

A well-balanced attack led the Cardinals over the Duke Blue Devils every single quarter on their way to victory last week. U of L took their contest on the road with ease, bagging a 62-22 victory over Duke. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-9. QB Malik Cunningham had a dynamite game for U of L; he passed for five TDs and 302 yards on 25 attempts in addition to rushing for two TDs and 224 yards. One of the most memorable plays of the matchup was Cunningham’s 72-yard touchdown rush in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, UK ran circles around the New Mexico State Aggies last week, and the extra yardage (708 yards vs. 278 yards) paid off. UK steamrolled past New Mexico State 56-16 at home. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Wildcats had established a 49-16 advantage. It was another big night for their QB Will Levis, who passed for four TDs and 419 yards on 31 attempts. Levis’ 62-yard touchdown toss to WR Josh Ali in the third quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the day.

This next contest is expected to be close, with the Cardinals going off at just a 3-point favorite. They have been consistent moneymakers against the spread when favored (3-1), so they might be worth a quick bet.

The wins brought U of L up to 6-5 and the Wildcats to 8-3. A pair of defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: U of L is stumbling into the game with the 187th most passing yards allowed per game in the nation, having given up 253.8 on average. UK has experienced some passing struggles of their own as they are 182nd worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 18 on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.

NFL Analyst Comments On A Confusing Trey Lance Narrative

The quarterback controversy continues for the San Francisco 49ers.

Last offseason, it was a battle between incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, who was coming off his rookie season.

Now, with new starter Brock Purdy recovering from surgery on a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, there are again calls from some to start Lance.

Lance certainly has potential and could very well become a very good QB, but he has started just four pro games so far, which hasn’t given him enough time to develop, let alone show what he will be capable of doing.

Going back further, he played only one full season of college football at North Dakota State University in the FCS subdivision.

Some are already calling him a bust, but JJ Zachariason says not so fast.

The 49ers gave up three first-round draft picks two years ago to acquire the third selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, which they used on Lance.

Given how much capital they gave up in order to get him, it made some sense for them to give him the starting job over Garoppolo last summer.

In Week 1, the Niners lost on the road to the Chicago Bears, and although Lance didn’t play terribly, some felt he was lackluster.

However, it should be pointed out that he played poorly in the second half, during which Soldier Field was hit with a very strong rainstorm that made conditions on the gridiron very difficult.

The following week, Lance suffered a severe ankle injury, and there went his season.

Purdy is expected to be able to throw a football again in early June, but since it is unknown if he will be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 campaign, let alone training camp, Lance could get another opportunity under center next season.

Damar Hamlin Reacts To Meeting President Biden

One of the most physically demanding and brutal sports in this country is football, and this year that became abundantly clear when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin almost lost his life on the gridiron during a game.

The sports world came to a halt when Hamlin collapsed during a Bills game, with the then-23-year-old motionless on the football field and looking as if he was never going to get up.

Fortunately, after one of the scariest moments in NFL history, Hamlin was able to make a full recovery in the hospital.

Hamlin has since become an inspirational figure and recently paid a visit to the White House to speak with President Biden.

The Bills safety was incredibly grateful for the time with President Biden and took to Twitter to show his gratitude by replying to his tweet about the team getting to talk.

Player safety in the NFL, along with all other sports in this country, became a significant concern following what happened to Hamlin on the football field.

It’ll be interesting to see what changes may come in the near future in the NFL as a result of this on-the-field incident and whether Hamlin decides to continue his football career.

With football being as brutal as it is, even with all the rules to protect players these days, it is pretty surprising that this hasn’t happened more often.

Hopefully, Hamlin continues to advocate for player safety as well as spread his message to those that need to hear it.
