What to Know

After two games on the road, the Kent State Golden Flashes are heading back home. The Golden Flashes and the Ohio Bobcats will face off in a Mid-American battle at 7 p.m. ET on Friday at Memorial A & C Center. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous games.

Kent State strolled past the Toledo Rockets with points to spare on Tuesday, taking the game 72-59. Kent State’s guard Sincere Carry did his thing and had 23 points and five assists along with six boards.

Meanwhile, Ohio had enough points to win and then some against the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks on Tuesday, taking their contest 91-78. It was another big night for Ohio’s forward Ben Vander Plas, who dropped a double-double on 30 points and ten rebounds in addition to six assists.

Kent State came up short against the Bobcats in the teams’ previous meeting last month, falling 80-72. Maybe the Golden Flashes will have more luck at home instead of on the road? Watch the matchup and check back on CBS Sports for all the details.

Mets Call Up A Familiar Face With Pete Alonso Down

On Wednesday, the struggling New York Mets were dealt a tough blow when slugger and first baseman Pete Alonso was hit on the hand with a 97-mph fastball from Atlanta Braves starter Charlie Morton.

Alonso was forced to exit the game as a result.

The slugger is now headed to the injured list.

However, Alonso’s temporary replacement is a familiar face.

On Friday, the Mets called up utility infielder Luis Guillorme from Triple-A.

He will join the team in Pittsburgh on Friday before they kick off a three-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

SNY, the TV home of the Mets announced the news on Twitter.

Guillorme made his Major League debut in 2018 with the Mets.

The 28-year-old was selected in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

He appeared in 102 games last season with the Mets.

In those games, the 28-year-old utilityman hit for a .273 average with two home runs and 17 RBI.

This season, he hasn’t had the same luck.

His average sits at a disappointing .233 through his first 27 games of the year.

However, he is reaching base at a .324 clip.

Guillorme can also play multiple positions in the infield and could potentially fill in at first base while Alonso recovers.

The Mets could also potentially give Eduardo Escobar some reps at first.

But with Alonso out, the Mets have been forced to get creative with their roster.

Guillorme will look to help provide a spark for a struggling Mets team that has now lost six games in a row.

Rangers Cement Their Place As The Hottest Team In MLB

The Texas Rangers lost their most recent game, 1-0 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, they are, quite comfortably, MLB’s hottest team.

One game doesn’t take away everything they have done in their last 30 games.

And if you examine what they have achieved in their last 30, well, you will be amazed.

Of their last 30 games, the Rangers have won a shocking 22 of them.

The closest teams in the standings over the last 30 contests are the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Miami Marlins with 19 wins.

The most impressive thing about Texas’ current run is that they have been excelling without Jacob deGrom.

Before the season, we wouldn’t have thought they had a 22-8 run in them without their best pitchers.

But they made some savvy signings, developed their own stars, and have been building a powerhouse capable of steamrolling just about every squad in the league.

In the last two offseasons, the Rangers have added a lot of talent: Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jon Gray, Andrew Heaney, Nate Eovaldi, deGrom, and many others.

Most of them have been excellent.

If we also consider they have had enormous success getting the most out of their own talent, such as Nathaniel Lowe, Adolis Garcia, and Josh Jung, they have put together a top-notch roster with a winning manager in Bruce Bochy.

The Rangers are 5-1 in June and have a five-game cushion in the AL West.

They haven’t shown signs of wearing down, and keep winning games.

With the best run differential in baseball at +154, they are ready to keep dominating.
