The San Francisco Giants got tough news on Tuesday when it was revealed that Evan Longoria would be starting the season on the injured list due to a torn ligament in his right index finger that would require surgery.

As a result of Longoria’s injury, Wilmer Flores will be San Francisco’s Opening Day third baseman.

There was no clear timetable set yesterday when the surgery was completed.

However today, we have an update courtesy of Giants insider Andrew Baggarly on Twitter, who says that Longoria’s estimated return time is roughly six weeks.

That will put him on target for a mid-May return.

Longoria On The Mend

Longoria is obviously still going to be out for a significant amount of time, but in the Giants’ case, it’s good to know that it won’t be too long, and that by mid-May, Longoria should be back in action.

Until then, San Francisco won’t have his bat in the lineup and will instead rely on Flores to play third base, with Jason Vosler as a potential backup.

The Giants are not doomed without Longoria though.

They still have a solid lineup that features Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Mike Yastrzemski, and Joc Pederson.

San Francisco still looks like a team that can compete for the NL West crown with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, or at the very least, be a Wild Card team.

They’ll have to make do without Longoria for a while, but they at least have options.

We’ll see how long it takes Longoria to recover from his surgery and how the Giants respond to not having him in their starting lineup for some time.
