Fantasy Basketball Week 12: Who’s hot, who’s not, who to add, who to drop and more from the weekend’s action

Published

on

Week 11 of the NBA’s 2021-22 season was interesting, to say the least. The league’s usually star-studded Christmas Day slate took place without several of the world’s biggest stars. Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant, and Trae Young were among the players ruled out due to health and safety protocols, but other notable names put on impressive performances on the big stage.

Now 2022 is upon us, and while 10-day-contract players seem poised to flood the hardwood because of COVID-19 outbreak, Fantasy managers should take note of several household names surging into the new year on a high note. Here are a few takeaways from Week 11 that could help you approach Week 12 in Fantasy basketball.

Who’s hot

“The Beard” hasn’t been a massive disappointment this year, but he didn’t kick off like the fantasy superstar he usually is. That will likely change in 2022. The Nets guard returned from health and safety protocols in tip-top shape and appears ready to stuff the stat sheet for the foreseeable future. Harden’s averaged 35.5 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists per contest on 46.7 percent shooting since Christmas Day. He’s also made more than 11 free throws per game during that span. Kyrie Irving’s impending debut could cut Harden’s scoring some, but fantasy managers should expect him to be a nightly triple-double threat now that he’s rediscovered his burst and ability to get to the charity stripe.

Love’s last two years have been riddled with injuries and he was hardly on the floor enough to be a reliable asset. He’s looked like the real deal over the last two weeks, though. The Cleveland Cavaliers‘ stretch four has averaged 23.8 points and 9.2 points since Week 10. He’s tallied 27.2 minutes per contest during that span. While his scoring is sure to go down once Darius Garland is back in the mix, a double-double threat with his three-point shooting prowess is sure to be a hot commodity. Love could be positioning himself to be a priority trade target ahead of the deadline, so fantasy managers who’ve held onto him until now should feel like winners.

No Paul George? No problem. The Los Angeles Clippers forward has flourished without his team’s superstar, who’s set to miss a few weeks with an elbow injury. He’s scored at least 20 points in six of his last seven games and made multiple three-pointers in five of those outings. He’ll be a major contributor on the boards as well and should climb the fantasy rankings until George’s return.

Who’s not

The Lakers‘ supposed star of the future was a major disappointment in December. He averaged 9.6 points on 38.7 percent shooting and took a back seat to Malik Monk ahead of the new year. While it’s unlikely that he’ll remain this bad for long, his ownership has dropped to 30 percent in CBS leagues and Anthony Davis’s return will likely make him even more of an afterthought if he keeps trending in the wrong direction.

Waiver wire spotlight

Nic Claxton entered Monday averaging 13.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks over his last five contests and has benefitted from the resurgence of a healthy Harden. His playing time is on the rise despite Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Paul Milsap being available. The Nets big has only played 15 games and seems poised to keep trending up.

Top drop

Diallo has found himself out of the rotation for the struggling Detroit Pistons for a good chunk of the 2021-21 season but had his first hot run in a long time ahead of the new year. He’s logged at least 30 minutes in six consecutive contests while averaging 21.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.3 steals while shooting 53.3 percent from the field. While he’s become an enticing waiver-wire target lately, I expect a steep dropoff now that Cade Cunningham and Saddiq Bey are back. The fourth option on the NBA‘s second-worst scoring option probably won’t shine much more.

Rookie Report

Evan Mobley and Scottie Barnes have dominated this year’s Rookie of the Year conversation, but Oklahoma City’s Josh Giddey had put together the most impressive Week 11 performance among first-year players. The lanky point guard became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double at 19 years and 84 days old. Giddey notched 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 14 assists against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, following a three-game layoff. The Thunder are struggling, but their young corps remains promising.

‘Ticked off’ Yankees shut out again: ‘We need to play better’

Published

on

NEW YORK (AP) — Rather than break out, Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees were shut out.

Again.

Kevin Gausman and the Toronto Blue Jays became the latest team to blank the Yankees, holding the AL East leaders to four measly singles Friday night in a 4-0 win

The Yankees didn’t get a runner beyond second base as they lost for the 14th time in 18 games.

New York have been shut out three times in the last six games and five times in the last 13. Judge and his teammates were shut out just six times in their first 107 games.

“I feel like we’re pressing a little bit,” Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu said. “Ticked off, frustrated, all of it.”

New York saw its lead over second-place Toronto shrink to eight games, its smallest since June 13.

“We can talk about that — eight, nine, seven, 10 — we need to play better. If we play like this, it’s not going to matter anyway,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

The Blue Jays won their third in a row. In that span, their starting pitchers have combined to allow only one earned run in 20 innings.

Gausman allowed four hits in seven innings, striking out seven with one walk. He pitched after Ross Stripling carried a perfect game into the seventh inning Wednesday and after Jose Berrios opened the Yankees series by giving up two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

“We say hitting is contagious, pitching can be, too,” interim manager John Schneider said. “You watch ‘Strip’ and you watch Jose and then Kevin’s about as good of a competitor as there is. So he kind of wanted to come out and kind of make a statement and keep the ball rolling.”

It was the third scoreless effort in four starts for Gausman (9-9), a span in which he has a 1.75 ERA.

“Kind of sounds bad to say, but we’re always trying to pitch better than the guy the night before,” Gausman said.

The right-hander issued a one-out walk to Judge in the first and gave up a two-out single to Josh Donaldson before retiring 10 in a row.

Gausman induced Isiah Kiner-Falafa to hit into a double play in between fifth-inning singles by Gleyber Torres and Oswaldo Cabrera and struck out Donaldson to strand Anthony Rizzo following a two-out single in the sixth.

“At times when the offense is struggling, we have a lot of guys who can put runs on the board with one swing, so I think at times we can get a little — I feel like we need to play the hero a little bit too much,” Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka said.

Yimi Garcia threw a perfect eighth and Jordan Romano tossed a hitless ninth in a non-save situation.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had an RBI groundout in the third before Alejandro Kirk led off the fourth by singling against Jameson Taillon (11-4). Teoscar Hernandez followed with a long homer to left-center — the 14th surrendered in the last 11 starts by Taillon, who gave up just six homers in his first 12 starts.

Danny Jansen had a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the Blue Jays, who have outscored the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles 19-3 over the last three games.

Taillon allowed six hits and walked none with five strikeouts over five-plus innings. He has a 5.35 ERA since carrying a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on June 2.

CABRERA’S BIG CATCH

Cabrera made an immediate impression in his first big league start in right field by leaping at the eight-foot wall and robbing Gurriel of a homer on the first pitch of the game by Taillon.

The rookie punctuated the catch by flexing and yelling before firing the ball back into the infield and exchanging an enthusiastic hand slap with Judge, the center fielder.

It was just the fourth professional start in right field for Cabrera, whose versatility — he is the first player in Yankees history to make his first three starts at three different positions, he started at third base and shortstop earlier this week — and energy has already impressed manager Aaron Boone.
