Eagles’ Avonte Maddox signs three-year extension reportedly worth $22.5 million

The Philadelphia Eagles have locked up another key player from their 2018 draft, signing cornerback Avonte Maddox to a three-year extension, the team announced on SaturdayAccording to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $22.5 million and includes $13.3 million guaranteed. 

The veteran cornerback joins three other members of the Eagles’ five-player 2018 draft who have received extensions from the club: offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, defensive end Josh Sweat, and tight end Dallas Goedert. Goedert inked a four-year, $57 million extension on Friday. Sixth-round pick offensive tackle Matt Pryor was traded to the Colts over the summer.

The 125th overall pick in the 2018 draft, Maddox came to Philadelphia following a successful college career at the University of Pittsburgh. In 45 regular-season games with the Eagles, Maddox has logged 170 tackles, three interceptions, 21 passes defended and four forced fumbles. Through 10 games this season, Maddox has already set career-highs with 48 tackles and two forced fumbles. He also came down with an interception during the Eagles’ Week 7 loss to the Raiders

The Eagles’ defense is currently 14th in the NFL in scoring, 13th in passing, 20th in rushing and 19th in both third-down and red-zone efficiency. The Eagles will face a Saints offense on Sunday that will be without Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara, who is missing time with a knee injury. Mark Ingram is prepared to carry the workload with Kamara inactive.
