College Football Meme Madness, Final Four: Vote for the sport’s best viral images of all time

Published

on

Just like the NCAA Tournament, the Meme Madness bracket has reached its final stages. The Final Four kicks off with two remaining memes from both the Fan Region and the Players & Coaches Region with a spot in the championship matchup on the line.

The Elite Eight was a story of two regions producing vastly different results. The Fan Region was blowout city with No. 1 seed Michigan Surrender Cobra capturing 81.3% of the vote and No. 3 seed Annoyed LSU Girl reaching 64.2% in victories. The same cannot be said for the Players & Coaches Region, as Urban Meyer’s golf cart pizza — the No. 1 seed — bowed out of the tournament by fewer than five percentage points to Hugh Freeze’s hospital bed. Now, the ultimate underdog has its shot.

Every year, dozens of images quickly become cultural touchstones in the sport by going viral on social media and in countless group chats. However, there are a select few that survive longer and permanently enter the college football universe.

Now, we want you to help pick the best.

In order to narrow it down, our staff curated 16 memorable memes from the Twitter era and separated them into two regions: Fans, and Coaches & Players. The bracket includes everything from Heisman Trophy winners and disgruntled fans to unforgettable coaching reactions. But more than anything, it includes the moments that makes college football so unique.

See the updated bracket and vote in the Final Four round of Meme Madness below.

Voting for every round round is being held via tweets from our Cover 3 Podcast account as embedded below. After two rounds of intense voting, the Final Four memes from the Fan Region and Players & Coaches Region are …

CBS Sports Graphic

(1) Michigan surrender cobra vs. (3) Annoyed LSU girl

(1) Michigan surrender cobra: The devastated reaction fit the insane moment: Michigan State recovered a fumbled punt snap and returned it for a shocking game-winning touchdown at the Big House in 2015. Standing the test of time is perhaps the greatest surrender cobra in college football history (not to mention Sean McDonough’s iconic call). The image beat out Eminem’s strange trip into the booth during the 2013 Notre Dame-Michigan game and then crushed Creepy Tennessee Starer with more than 81% of the vote to reach the Final Four.

(3) Annoyed LSU girl: The Tigers’ matchup against Alabama in 2018 didn’t quite go to plan in a 29-0 loss. During the blowout, the CBS broadcast caught an annoyed fan staring cooly at the camera in a moment immediately went viral. The GIF featuring the camera zoom creates an impact. One year later, the same fan posted a GIF of her smiling as her Tigers beat the Crimson Tide en route to a national title. Annoyed LSU girl beat out the slumped Virginia tube man in a tight 3-6 battle, but then cruised to an upset over Shirtless NC State dude with more than 64% of the vote.

(5) Freeze’s hospital bed approval vs. (2) Beamer’s 0-0 celebration

(5) Hugh Freeze’s hospital bed approval: The upset of Meme Madness arrived as Freeze’s hospital bed edged out No. 1 seed Urban Meyers golf cart pizza by just 3.6% to move onto the Final Four. Most people would consider a herniated disk and life-threatening staph infection a good excuse to take a few days off from work. Not Freeze. The Liberty coach arrived in a wheelchair and laid out in a hospital bed to coach a 24-0 loss to Syracuse. The most iconic image came from the postgame “handshake” when Freeze waved to Dino Babers from his perch above the stadium.

(2) Frank Beamer’s 0-0 celebration: Former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer was known for his physical defenses and comfort playing in unorthodox games. When the cameras captured him celebrating the end of a scoreless regulation against Wake Forest, it was a peak Beamer (and ACC football) moment. Beamer beat out the famous image of Derrick Henry towering over Mark Ingram to move on, and then edged out Bobby Petrino’s Neck Brace in a tight battle.

Which team will reign supreme and claim the first NBA Cup?

Speaking of the NBA Cup, the league showed it off on Monday morning, along with medals for the winning players and the tournament MVP trophy too.

Dave McMenamin shared pictures of the trophies on Twitter and the reaction from fans was decidedly mixed.

Some people came straight out and claimed that the trophy is officially “the ugliest award in sports history.”

Others called these “clown show awards.”

There were some positive reactions to the trophies, of course, but the majority of people didn’t seem very impressed.

Then were many people who showed their support for their favorite teams.

One fan plainly stated that the New Orleans Pelicans were going to earn these trophies, while others showed their support for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Very soon, all fans will know which team was the best of the best in the In-Season Tournament.

The first games of the next round are being held on Monday night with the Pelicans facing off against the Sacramento Kings and the Indiana Pacers battling the Boston Celtics.

Although people weren’t sure how the tournament would go when it was first announced, the reaction has been very kind so far.

Saints Star In Concussion Protocol For Second Time This Season

Published

The New Orleans Saints have not been good this season.

Through 12 games, the Saints have a record of 5-7.

Yet, they are still alive for the NFC South crown and a playoff berth.

One player who has not panned out as they had hoped is quarterback Derek Carr.

The Saints signed Carr to a lucrative contract this offseason.

But he has not been good in the first year of his four-year contract.

To make matters worse, Carr has consistently been injured this year.

On Sunday, he took a big hit that knocked him out of the game.

According to Adam Schefter, Carr has been placed in concussion protocol.

This is the second time Carr has been placed in concussion protocol in the last month.

So, it makes sense that he is going to miss some time.

Recovering from concussions is different for every player.

But the Saints should be extra cautious for someone who has had two concussions in the past four weeks.

Now it looks like the Saints will turn the starting job over to Jameis Winston until Carr is healthy enough to return.

Most NFL fans know Winston as a big risk-taker.

He once threw 30 interceptions in a season, but he can help the Saints win games.

It is not crazy to think Winston has a higher upside than Carr.

He might be able to do more for the Saints offense than Carr could.

New Orleans needs to win as many games as possible to keep pace in the NFC South race.

It seems like they will have to find ways to win games without Carr under center.

Fans React To Today’s News About Shaquille Leonard

Many NFL fans have been waiting to see where linebacker Shaquille Leonard would sign.

He was released by the Indianapolis Colts a few weeks back and spent the last few weeks looking for a new home.

Two teams that Leonard met with were the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.

Both could use some linebacker depth and Leonard spent this past weekend deciding where to play.

According to Ian Rapoport, Leonard has decided to join the Eagles on a one-year deal.

After watching the Eagles on Sunday, it is clear they need help at linebacker.

Philadelphia was dominated by the San Francisco 49ers, as the Niners scored 42 points in the game.

San Francisco attacked the Eagles’ linebackers, knowing that was one of their weakest spots on defense.

The Eagles now hope Leonard can give them something that will help fix their issues.

But, Leonard is not much of a difference-maker anymore.

He was once an All-Pro, but that player is long gone.

Still, he provides the Eagles with some depth at one of their weakest positions.

Many people around the league believe this move will do nothing to close the gap between them and the 49ers.

It will be interesting to see if Leonard can have any positive impact on the Eagles’ defense.

It is rare for players who are free agents this late in the season to be difference-makers.

Also, the Colts would have kept him if they thought he could help them win games.

Ultimately, this is a desperate move from a team that needs help at linebacker.
