Canada’s Gushue gets by China to improve to 5-2 in Olympic men’s curling
Canada’s Brad Gushue climbed to a 5-2 record in the men’s curling tournament at the Winter Olympic Games with a 10-8 victory over host China on Tuesday morning in Beijing.
Gushue, who won Olympic gold at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, maintains sole possession of third place in the standings with two round-robin games remaining. The top four teams advance to the medal round.
The high-scoring affair saw the lead change back and forth through every end in the first half. China started with the hammer and with Canada sitting three stone, skip Xiuyue Ma was forced to hit for a single in the opening end. Canada replied taking two points in the second, China matched with a pair in the third and the teams traded deuces in the fourth and fifth ends as well.
Tied 6-6 in the eighth end, Ma jammed a triple takeout attempt that allowed Gushue to ease in his last to score three. Ma was able to get two back in the ninth and sat shot rock buried on the button in the 10th, however, Gushue was able to draw around and tap it back to hold on.
Canada next plays ROC, skipped by Sergei Gluhkov (Tuesday 7:05 a.m. ET).
The Canadian women’s curling team, skipped by Jennifer Jones, has the day off with their next game against the United States, skipped by Tabitha Peterson (Tuesday 8:05 p.m. ET). Jones is tied for fifth in the standings with a 3-3 record.
