The San Francisco 49ers exceeded expectations last season.

However, they got hot at the right time and made it to the NFC Championship Game, but their limitations at quarterback worked against them.

Jimmy Garoppolo did enough, but he was hardly the reason for their success.

That defeat to the Los Angeles Rams gave the franchise a better plan of action for the 2022 season.

They will trade Garoppolo and let Trey Lance take over.

After all, why trade up and draft a quarterback if you won’t play him?

The Niners thought their veteran play-caller would attract some interest during the offseason.

But weeks after free agency started, Garoppolo is still with the team.

His postseason performance, coupled with an injury to his throwing shoulder, might hinder a transaction.

Even with the possibility of having both Garoppolo and Lance next season, 49ers owner Jed York is unfazed with its implications.

York compared the current quarterback situation to when they had Joe Montana and Steve Young.

The Real Problem Of The 49ers

Unfortunately, the problem might be because they don’t have a quarterback at the same level as either Montana or Young.

Garoppolo is a decent quarterback who can lead a team to victory, but he has his share of disappointing games.

Meanwhile, they won’t know what they have with Lance unless they let him become the starter.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan will have a dilemma in choosing between the quarterback that gives him the best chance of winning and the prospect they must develop to become the franchise play-caller.

With Garoppolo still on the roster, Lance won’t take off because he will always be overshadowed by the veteran.

Therefore, the starting role may go to the player who has a better training camp.
