This week’s Texas Open is the last event on the PGA Tour schedule ahead of the Masters at Augusta National — the first major championship of 2022 — and contains both a good field in addition to solid prep work for a week from now. There are myriad storylines to follow throughout the week, including Jordan Spieth’s bid to try and repeat as Texas Open champion after he won for the first time in nearly four years last year at TPC San Antonio.

Another intriguing storyline to follow is Rory McIlroy’s work ahead of yet another swing at the career grand slam. McIlroy was at Augusta National earlier this week getting some practice in, and he noted what he likes about TPC San Antonio’s ability to replicate some of the shots at Augusta.

“I think around the greens here is, it can prepare you [for the Masters],” said McIlroy, who is part of the Texas Open field this week. “I think the runoffs around the greens, the undulations on the greens, some of the shots you face if you do, if you do miss it … and some of the bunkering around this course, the bunkers are pretty deep around the greenside. I think more so around the greens and sort of off the tee. This is a generous course off the tee, Augusta’s somewhat generous as well, but it’s just a different look. I think around the greens more sort of the chipping and pitching aspects are good preparation.”

Joining Spieth and McIlroy at TPC San Antonio are last year’s Masters winner, Hideki Matsuyama, as well as Bryson DeChambeau, Abraham Ancer and Corey Conners. While everyone will have Augusta in the back of their minds this week, this tournament should still be terrific and could either produce a new Masters favorite — like it did last year with Spieth — or a final Masters spot for somebody who’s not already in the field. Either would be meaningful, and should make this tournament must-see TV all weekend long.
